I have been a work at home mom for over 25 years. And it has its perks and challenges. I was able to eat lunch with my children during a work day, address any childhood emergency that arose. Those are priceless so well worth the challenges. So I hope this list helps you.
Here are 12 tips for creating an Effective Home Office:
Choose a dedicated space: Designate a specific area of your home as your workspace. It should be quiet, free from distractions, and have good lighting.
Invest in a comfortable chair: You'll be sitting for long periods, so choose a chair that provides good support and comfort. I have been using ergonomic Herman Miller Aeron Chair for years. Do some shopping your back is worth the expense.
Get a proper desk: A sturdy and spacious desk will allow you to work more efficiently. I recently added an adjustable stand up desk to my space. Really enjoying the ability to move while I am working.
Have good lighting: Natural light is best, but if that's not possible, use task lighting to ensure you have sufficient light to work.
Keep it organized: Clutter can distract you and make concentrating hard, so keep your workspace neat and tidy. Always a work in progress.
Personalize your space: Decorate your workspace with items that make you feel motivated and inspired.
Artwork: Adding a beautiful natural photo or two on your walls will help ground you when you need a visual break. See my Shoppe and add some beauty to your walls.
Use a good computer and peripherals: Invest in a reliable computer, monitor, keyboard, and mouse. Invest is the best system you can it will be worth it in the long run.
Have backup power: A battery backup system protects your equipment from power surges or outages. We Floridians lose our power frequently in the rainy seasons, so this is a critical part of our gear.
Take breaks: Schedule regular breaks to stretch your legs, rest your eyes, and refresh your mind. I am bad at this personally but working on it myself.
Establish a routine: Set regular work hours and stick to them. This will help you stay on track and avoid procrastination.
Set boundaries: when you are home be home, when you are at work be at work. What does that really mean? For me, If a business call comes in at 8:30pm I will NOT answer it. We have email, texts and voicemail. When it is family time be true it it. When it is work teach your family and friends to respect that. It will teach your children good work ethics.
